How do you know your marketing works?

Business owners, how do you know your marketing works? Easy. Your competitor(s) steals your idea. Well, that's being a tad unkind. Instead, they might borrow it, or adopt it, or trial it, or roll it out, or ... you get the picture. Happens a lot to us, which is why I know we're on the right track. Models get 'borrowed', clients get contacted with a 'super cheap offer', new photographers enter the market offering last year's ideas they've 'discovered' doing a little online 'research', new mark

Website updates take shape

The latest batch of website updates is finally coming to an end - just in time for me to go on holidays - with more and newer images included on the site's gallery and photography pages to showcase our work. That said, our Facebook page remains the place to go to view the very latest examples of our imaging. Rose and Anjie keep the Facebook page fresh and up-to-date with posts that cover the gamut of 'what we do', whereas this website is more attuned to show off 'who we are'. Whilst I'm away

Poetry has no place

Best opening line on a track in my iPhone has to be "Poetry is no place for a heart that's a whore" from Martha Wainwright's gorgeously evocative Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole released in 2005. Can you tell I've spent several hours in the car since Saturday listening to iTunes mixes? With a wedding at Greens Beach, house at Campbell Town, a couple of houses in Burnie and the usual around town work the life of this photographer is one packed with plenty of kilometres in das Polo. We had a canc

Have you got the JITs?

J.I.T.? What's that you ask. I'm reminded of the story of a Battle of Britain ace named Robert Tuck, who, in the heady days before the Second World War thought that a career in the military would suit him to a tee. In particular, he was keen on a career in the Royal Air Force, so headed to RAF HQ for his career making - or breaking - interview with the brass. Young Bob sat down for the interview and was having a great time, until one high flyer asked him "So, what do you know about I.C.E.?

Why family photos matter

This is my favourite family photo. It shows my mate Belle, her hubby Vic and their boys Raph and James - James is the one in Belle's belly. I think it's one of my favourite family photos because it tells a story. It tells the story of a very special time in this family's life. Every family has special moments and I was fortunate enough to get to record that particular moment on the beach that afternoon. If you know me you know I don't do sentimental, but all these thoughts of family p

A commercial kind of week

Maybe it's the start of the new financial year, but last week was very heavily focused on our commercial photography and communications services, with a range of quotes going out for event imaging, some magazine work, commercial images and the real estate photography that is a mainstay of our operations. Highlights of the week included: Planning upcoming photoshoots for our 'Babyface' competition. Photos of both Sophie H and Cleo will make fine additions to the Celebrate Yourself marketin

I hate doing budgets

Yup, it's that time of the year when I have to sit down and prepare the end of year financials as well as do the budget for the year ahead. It's a necessary evil, and for someone who's a creative type wading through spreadsheets is no fun at all. So I thought I'd take a break from that to post some photos from a shoot I did a couple of weeks back. They're of Elsa, who is a Hobart-based model who shot with me for her modelling portfolio. We christened the new studio and our new lights - and I'

Things are getting hot in the office… and in real estate

These are strange days indeed in the local real estate sector. The upcoming launch of a couple of new real estate agencies, coupled with the merger/expansion of another runs counter to the market itself, which has been described variously as anywhere from tight through to the toughest it's been in a generation or more. So where does that leave us? Well, I would argue effective marketing is now more important than ever and professional photography and floorplans are the cornerstone of any s

Professional photography’s pluses

A picture is worth a thousand words, and in real estate, a good picture could be worth thousands of dollars. That’s because good photographs of a home engage potential buyers, helping them to connect to it. Good photos encourage buyers to inspect a property while bad photographs turn people away. Put simply, the aim of good quality real estate photography is to get buyers to visit the home. From there, the agent will do their bit to show off the home’s best assets. And as any agent will t
